Pain scale in zebrafish. Hypothetical pain and welfare scale based upon Fractal Dimension (FD) analysis of complex swimming trajectories of zebrafish. Boxes indicate the range of FD values associated with each treatment group (control, sham handled (anesthetised and handled only), fin clip and lidocaine, fin clip, PIT tag, 1%, 5% and 10% acetic acid injected into the lip). A decrease in FD value indicates a reduction in welfare and an arbitrary scale of intensity represents zebrafish welfare as normal, stressed and in pain from mild to severe (reproduced under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) licence from Deakin et al., 2019).19 |
